Trivia: Child actress Marilyn Harris had done several takes of the drowning scene, none of which turned out quite right. Although wet and tired, she agreed to do one last take of the scene, the one that appears in the finished film, after director James Whale promised her anything she wanted if she would do so. She asked for a dozen hard-boiled eggs, her favorite snack. Whale gave her two dozen. The DVD commentary for the film suggests that Harris wasn’t actually a good swimmer, quoting Harris as saying that she had only a couple of swimming lessons before filming and had never dived under water before.

Goofs: Revealing mistakes: Early in the film, Henry is holding the monsters hand and telling Fritz there’s nothing to be afraid of. If you look at the body, you can see a dress shoe on the body’s foot.

Trivia: The role of Gort was played by Lock Martin, the doorman from Grauman’s Chinese Theater, because he was extremely tall. However, he was unable to pick up Helen because he was so weak and had to be aided by wires (in shots from the back where he’s carrying her, it’s actually a lightweight dummy in his arms). He also had difficulty with the heavy Gort suit and could only stay in it for about a half-hour at a time.

Goofs: Continuity: In the scenes showing the arrival of the military, Klaatu’s injury and the eradication of the weapons, the shadows of the military equipment, spaceship and actors change radically. The first shadows shown of the tanks are long as if the time of day were either very early morning, or, likely, late afternoon. Then Klaatu leaves the spaceship, he throws a fairly short shadow such as one showing within an hour or two of noon. The tanks and Gort also show the short shadows. When Gort starts to destroy the tanks and weapons the shadows are still indicating that it’s perhaps 2pm. When he finishes, a few moments later, the shadows are long and drawn out, like they were at the beginning of the scene. In movie time, no than 10-30 minutes has passed while the shadows say it’s like half a day.
